Merriam- Webster lists the definition of a refugee as a person who flees to a foreign country or power to escape danger or persecution. On today, November 10, over 10,000 bloggers from around the world will unite to raise our voices on behalf of more than 40 million voiceless refugees. To ask the world to face the atrocities so many human beings must endure and to join hearts and minds to help bring forward information, understanding and action.
There have been so many groups of people fleeing their countries and as the holiday season nears I am reminded of another group of refugees. A group of people left the East Midlands of England in the early 1600's to escape harassment and religious persecution. These early settlers or Pilgrims as they are commonly called established the Plymouth Colony in what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. Plymouth is best known for being the landing site of The Mayflower and most notably for the First Thanksgiving Feast in The United States, now known as Thanksgiving Day.
This American Holiday is celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November. Families and friends gather to express thanks for their material and spiritual possessions. This is now the perfect opportunity for us all to be mindful of those other refugees who will not be spending this day with their loved ones. We all should give thanks for what we have and hope that others will have something to give thanks for,not only on Thanksgiving day but everyday.
That's the hardest part in thinking about this issue, is what war has done to familes. Thanks for the interesting historical perspective.
The things that are happening in the world today I'm sure are worse than those past years but everything is relative and as we know history does repeat itself. I think the difference in these times is that we have the technology to bring attention, help and protection to those in need.
Thanksgiving--the perfect time of the year to stop and reflect on how fortunate we are and to give thanks.
It's so true. I heard that Canadians have a special day to give thanks also. Tell me about it.
